Passport & Visa

All students should have a valid passport for the period of their study in Jönköping.

Residence Permit for study (study permit) required

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU and you are planning to study for longer than three months, you must have a residence permit. The permit must have been issued before you can travel to Sweden.

Note that unless you have a government/organizational scholarship or grant, you cannot apply for a study permit earlier than 4 months before the start of the studies.

Work permit

Admitted students with a residence permit for study are allowed to work in Sweden during their period of study. No additional work permit is required. However, be aware that it may be difficult to find a part-time job, especially if you do not speak Swedish. Please note that university studies are full-time and may be difficult to combine with work and that the Migration Agency has requirements for registration per semester and progress in the studies in order to grant an extension of a study permit.

Persons who have lived legally in an EU country for an uninterrupted period of five years may apply for long-term resident status in that country. Persons who are granted long-term resident status receive a special EC/EU residence permit. This gives them certain rights, similar to those of an EU citizen.

Residence Permit not required

If you are a citizen of an EU/EEA country you have the right to reside in Sweden.
