Languaging-Musicking - Including/excluding practices inside and outside school

The international symposium Languaging–Musicking. Including/excluding practices inside and outside school will be held at Örebro University, Sweden on the 2 and 5 March 2012.

The multidisciplinary symposium is being organized jointly by the research group Communication, Culture & Diversity (CCD/KKOM) and the research group Aesthetics, Culture and Media (ACCLAIM) at the Academy of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences and the School of Music, Theatre and Art at Örebro University, Sweden.

The main objective of this international symposium is to establish a forum for dialogue on musicking and languaging (languaging includes different subjects in the language sciences and mathematics). The symposium is envisaged in terms of a discussion forum that will stimulate an exchange of ideas and experiences on the intrinsic values of musical and communicative experiences. It is hoped that this critical arena will enable the establishment of multidisciplinary research platform/ projects that have a bearing on teacher education.

The focus on the 2 March 2012 will be on languaging (with a specific focus on language subjects and mathematics) and on 5 March musicking. Two plenary presentations, each followed by discussions will be held on both days. The symposium will be held in English.

Professor Roger Säljö, University of Gothenburg, Sweden
Title: Learning to model: Word problems and reasoning in literate environments.

5 March 2012: Musicking

Professor Petter Dyndahl, Hedmark University College, Norway
Title: The multiple performativity of musicking. Small talk[s) with Butler and Foucault.

Associate professor Ruth Wright, The University of Western Ontario, Canada
Title: Music as pedagogic discourse: investigating school musicking through Basil Bernstein's theory of the pedagogic device.
