Looking back on Jönköping University throughout the years
Beginning of Jönköping University
In 1990, a new chapter began for higher education in Sweden. The government aimed to give higher education institutions more freedom, and Jönköping University seized the opportunity by becoming a foundation. With strong support from local businesses, the county council, and municipalities, the Jönköping University Foundation was established on 1 July 1994. It marked a time of change and growth. Initially, the university was divided into three schools: the School of Education and Communication, the School of Engineering, and Jönköping International Business School. Additionally, a service organization called University Services was set up to support the new institution. As time passed, the university expanded, welcoming the School of Health Sciences (now School of Health and Welfare) as its fourth school in 2002.
Jönköping has been committed to education long before JU's modern transformation. The city saw its first nurses graduate in 1897, followed by the establishment of a primary school seminar in 1947 and a preschool seminar in 1963, showcasing its strong ties to the education sector.
Academically, Jönköping University has made significant progress. The first professors were appointed in 1996, and doctoral programmes were introduced in four subjects in 1999. This academic growth continued in 2004 when the university expanded its doctoral programme to include the humanities and social sciences, allowing for research education across multiple faculties. In terms of its location, the university was initially spread out across Jönköping. However, in 1994, this changed when the municipality acquired a central area from Jönköpings Mekaniska Werkstad, which became the university's main campus. A new property organization was established to support its ongoing development. With strong commitment, vision, and community support, Jönköping University was founded. Since then, it has continued to grow and become a key player in both national and international education and research.
It's been 30 years since the Jönköping University Foundation was established. Today, we proudly stand in the heart of Jönköping, with a vibrant campus full of life and learning. Our influence reaches across the entire region, where, together with our partners, we're shaping the future. Throughout these years, both JU and Jönköping have grown and evolved side by side. With a lively student community, top-notch education, and strong international ties, we've built a place where academia blends seamlessly with culture, nature, and collaboration.
Here's to 30 years of innovation and growth!
